Latex comes from rubber trees in the forests of Asia and is a rapidly renewable resource. The average rubber tree produces 4 lbs of sap yearly, which makes it a rapidly renewable resource that can be mined safely, without harm to the tree, for generations.

Rubber is harvested by hand (like maple syrup) and without the use of chemicals or large farm equipment. Once the rubber milk is tapped from the tree, it destabilizes very quickly, and to reduce the need for additional chemicals, processing is done nearby and on the same day of harvest.

Latex is processed one of two ways – Talalay or Standard (or natural). Talalay is much more involved process, which takes more time and energy than Standard. But the finished product over-performs in terms of quality and longevity.

Turning rubber into Talalay latex

The milk is whipped and frothed and then poured into molds that look like nail beds. The pins sticking up add air to the mold, speed the processing (foam rubber is a poor conductor of heat and cold) and the drying afterwards.

Once the mold is poured, it’s flash frozen. As it freezes, bubbles form to create an interconnecting structure – millions of tiny pin holes that give the latex both longevity and ventilation. The matrix is shot with carbon dioxide to further set the mold and force the bubbles to interconnect. The mold is finally heated to cure the latex and give it its resilient properties.

The finished Talalay latex is removed from its mold and thoroughly washed (multiple times), dried and inspected according to strict European standards.

Natura carries both Talalay and Standard latex, as well as a synthetic latex blend. All 3 give a unique feel and many of our mattresses combine different thicknesses. If you’ve never tried a latex mattress, visit a Natura Retailer near you and see for yourself.

I’m not saying that the right bed and mattress bed will cure your insomnia or sleep apnea or sleep paralysis. But a bed or mattress that’s uncomfortable or unsuited to your needs will add to sleep problems.
What’s your bed like? Is it starting to look a bit the worse for wear? Does it sag in the middle? Can you feel the shape of the springs when you lie down? I’ve even heard of people who were trying to sleep on a mattress so old that the springs were actually sticking through the cover! I certainly hope you are not in that category. But if it is time to choose a new mattress, here are a few tips.

SOFT OR FIRM
A soft, fluffy mattress can feel so comforting when you first lie down. You sink right into it and it seems to cuddle your body in loving arms.

WARNING: You may not feel quite so coddled when morning comes. Some people advocate sleeping with a sheet of plywood under the mattress. This may be necessary for some severe back problems or injuries. I don’t believe it’s necessary for the average person.
True, a firm mattress is best, but it should have enough give to conform to the contours of your body. It should support, not confine.

SHOP FOR A MATTRESS LIKE YOU’D SHOP FOR SHOES
How do you shop for shoes? You try them on. Do the same with a mattress. Don’t be shy. Lie down on it. Roll over. Stretch and wriggle. Don’t rush. Take as much time as you need to make your decision. After all, you’ll be spending a lot of hours lying on this bed.

You should be checking for:

COMFORT – How does it feel? Is it soft enough to be comfortable yet firm enough to give support? Does it seem to conform to the shape of your body? If you cannot find a comfortable position no matter how you lie, you probably have the wrong mattress.

SUPPORT – Does the mattress offer support where your body needs it?” Not everyone is built the same, you know.

SPACE – When you buy shoes, you check for enough room to wriggle your toes. Do you have room on this bed to wriggle, to stretch, to roll over in comfort? If you have a bed partner, there should be ample room for both people to toss and turn as they need to.

QUALITY – Last but far from least, is this bed of good quality? Beds and mattresses are not cheap, so you want to be sure you’re getting something that’s going to stand up to use. Your best bet is to deal with a reputable outlet and buy a name brand product.

So how is your bed? Is it several years old? Does it sag, wobble, groan? Do you have the imprint of the springs on your back?

You say you can’t afford to buy a new bed or mattress right now. I say you can’t afford not to. Sleep is an important part of your life, right up there with food, water and air. Give your bed the attention it needs and sleep peacefully throughout the night.

Bed bugs are insects. Cimex lectularius is the species most commonly found in homes. Adult bed bugs have oval-shaped bodies with no wings. Prior to feeding, they are about 1/4 inch long and flat as paper. After feeding, they turn dark red and become bloated. Eggs are whitish, pear-shaped and about the size of a pinhead. Clusters of 10-50 eggs can be found in cracks and crevices.

Bed bugs have a one-year life span during which time a female can lay 200-400 eggs depending on food supply and temperature. Eggs hatch in about 10 days.

There are currently no known cases of disease associated with bed bug bites. Most people are not aware that they have been bitten. People who are more sensitive to the bite can have localized allergic reactions. Scratching the bitten areas may lead to infection.

What do bed bugs feed on?
Bed bugs prefer to feed on human blood, but will also bite mammals and birds. Bed bugs bite at night, and will bite all over a human body, especially around the face, neck, upper torso, arms and hands. Bed bugs can survive up to six months without feeding. Both male and female bed bugs bite.

How do bed bugs get into my home?
Bed bugs are often carried into a home on objects such as furniture and clothing. Bed bugs can be found in areas such as:

Seams, creases, tufts and folds of mattresses and box springs

Cracks in the bed frame and head board

Under chairs, couches, beds, dust covers

Between the cushions of couches and chairs

Under area rugs and the edges of carpets

Between the folds of curtains

In drawers

Behind baseboards, and around window and door casings

Behind electrical plates and under loose wallpaper, paintings and posters

In cracks in plaster

In telephones, radios, and clocks

Bed bugs can also travel from apartment to apartment along pipes, electrical wiring and other openings.

What can I do if I have bed bugs in my home?

The best method to deal with bed bugs is Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which combines a variety of techniques and products that pose the least risk to human health and the environment.

Consult with your local health department or a professional Pest Control operator to confirm that you have bed bugs.

Inspect your mattress and bed frame, particularly the folds, crevices and the underside, and other locations where bed bugs like to hide.

Use a nozzle attachment on the vacuum to capture the bed bugs and their eggs. Vacuum all crevices on your mattress, bed frame, baseboards and any objects close to the bed. It is essential to vacuum daily and empty the vacuum immediately.

Wash all your linens and place them in a hot dryer for 20 minutes. Consider covering your pillows and mattress with a plastic cover.

Remove all unnecessary clutter.

Seal cracks and crevices between baseboards, on wood bed frames, floors and walls with caulking. Repair or remove peeling wallpaper, tighten loose light switch covers, and seal any openings where pipes, wires or other utilities come into your home (pay special attention to walls that are shared between apartments).

Monitor daily by setting out glue boards or sticky tape (carpet tape works well) to catch the bed bugs. Closely examine any items that you are bringing into your home. Note: Furniture put out by someone else for garbage pick-up could be infested with bed bugs. Use caution.

Consult professional pest control services and discuss options that pose the least risk to humans and the environment.

Note: If you choose to treat the infestation with an insecticide, call a Professional Pest Control Service for more information. Use the least toxic product available and follow all manufacturers’ instructions.

Whether you choose Integrated Pest Management or insecticides, you may continue to see some living bed bugs for up to ten days. This is normal. If you continue to see a large number of bed bugs after two weeks, contact a professional pest control service.

Having Back Pain? I’ve the solution – (coconut fiber mattress)

Not long ago, I sprained my back due to carrying heavy things. It was painful and horrible. Through daily massage my back eventually healed but never restore fully to its healthy condition. Besides that I’ve had some nagging back pain (for years) in most of the cases like after sweeping, mopping and washing. Activities that need me to bend my back.

I’ve found the perfect solution to combat back pain. The types of mattress you sleep on do actually influence the well-being of your spine. Sleep on hard type mattress such as the 100% natural coconut fibre mattress. These types of mattress help provide good support for your spine and are good for blood circulation. I’ve just bought one and sleep for like 4 days on the coconut fibre mattress. And I’m thrilled to say that my back pain has healed completely!

Not only are coconut fibre mattress ideal for old people and people with back pain condition, even babies are sleeping on it too.

Firmness. A soft mattress may feel great when you first lie down, but by morning you may find your body plagues by aches and pains. You need a bit of support so’s your back doesn’t sag.

Look for comfort. Does the mattress seem to conform to the shape of your body? Don’t be shy. This is something that’s going to have an effect on your health and well-being so try it in the store. Lie down. Roll over. Can you get comfortable?

Does this mattress offer support where YOU need it? Don’t listen to sales people who try to tell you it’s just right. They don’t know about that slipped disc in your lumbar region or the fact you suffer from whip lash. Shop for your personal needs.

Is it wide enough? Do you sleep alone or with a partner? Do you (or your partner) toss and turn? A smaller bed may be just right for some people, but if you’re tall or overweight, make sure you have the space you need.

Shop for quality. Don’t go for the cheapest model in the store. You get what you pay for. Lower priced mattresses tend to be thinner, poorly made and lack the firmness to give you support. When in doubt, shop for well known brand names in a reputable store.

Never buy a second hand mattress. That’s just asking for trouble. The shape of the bed has learned to conform to the person who has been using it. It will never learn to fit your shape. You may also be inheriting other problems. Diseases, or even bugs. Certainly it will be filled with dust allergens and, yuck, flakes of the previous owner’s skin that slew off in the night. Buy new!

Don’t say you can’t afford a new bed or mattress. You can’t NOT afford it. It’s your health, your rest, your peace of mind. This is doubly important if you are one of the many people who suffer from sleep disorders. Sleep well. Stay healthy.
